History
City X is an American rock band from Annapolis, Maryland. Formed in 2003 by Alec (guitar), his cousin Micah (Bass), and their friend Dan (drums), they released their debut self-titled album in 2005. After moderate success thanks to the lead single “Believe”, they signed onto Cookies & Biscuits Records where they began touring with other artists like Spanky Revolution and Bishop Butters. They soon followed up with their second album “When Love Failed” in 2007, although to mixed reception. The band took a more “stripped down” approach with their 3rd album, “Till the End of the Earth”. Being somewhat of a concept album, with themes such as politics and modern society, it still fell short of the success they saw with their first record.
Brian joined the band for their 2012 album “The Show”. This concept album focuses again on political and personal struggles. Certain sections of songs, most noteworthy “The Show”, “Act Zero”, and “A Circus Paradise” utilize a circus march beat. “The Show” was well received by critics, and was regarded by the band as being “the best so far”. City X began writing new material in 2013 for a 5th album, however, due to creative differences, they entered a hiatus that would last 8 years.
During the bands hiatus, Alec continued making music as a solo artist under the name Aetherius. These songs have a more detuned metal focus, which in an interview he stated was the direction he suggested City X depart to. “Vertigo” for example, the lead single off the 2015 self-titled debut album, was originally intended for what would’ve been City X’s then 5th album. Aetherius also released “The Artist” in 2017, followed by “The Devil’s Creature” in 2019.
In late 2021, City X returned with the announcement of a new song, “A Cure for the Ache”. This would be the lead single for their 5th studio album “V”, which released in July 2022 through POM Records. The album was well received and even earned the band a spot on the 4th Battle of the Bands.
