Formation and Early Years (July 2008)
While all four members of the current line up were friends in Elementary School, Suicide By Spoon was originally a 3 piece Pop-Punk Trio with an almost completely different line up, formed in Kelowna, BC. It was founded by Chris, the current Bassist of Suicide By Spoon as more of a hobby than a serious band. They had written some material and played a few shows locally, but never released an album.
The band eventually split up as the members grew apart.
During this time, Adam played the drums in a concert band at a private school. His original instrument in band was Tenor Saxaphone, but his band teacher insisted he switch to drums after seeing how proficient he was while playing during a break between classes.
They made it to nationals four years in a row, and won twice.

Demo Tapes and Current Line up. (August, 2010)
Meanwhile in England in a Student Exchange program, Martin and his brother Nick played in the band "Lonely Hearts." Lonely Hearts was a 4 piece Post Hardcore Group that had become locally popular and was scheduled to release an EP. Martin wrote the majority of the music, but as time went on the bassist and Martin clashed often. As their student exchange came to a close, Martin and Nick got sick of the attitude of the other members and left the band. Lonely Hearts was disbanded shortly after.
Over summer vacation, the four ended up catching up via group chats and instant messenger, rekindling their old friendships. During these chats, Martin pitched the idea of starting a band to Chris and a few rough demos were recorded virtually. After returning home to Canada, Martin and Nick had enrolled at same Secondary School that Chris was attending. Adam had also requested his parents transfer him to the same high school as his three friends, as he disliked his private school. The group would often practice songs and play tiny concerts on their lunch break at the back of the school or meet up on weekends to write and record material for a potential album. In Autumn, an Unreleased Demo Tape by the name of "Lucid Simplicity" was eventually completed, but this remains an unsigned release that was mostly distributed to friends of the band. It has become a running joke that they neither deny nor confirm the existence of this EP when asked of it. |
Debut LP, First Tour, New friends and Record Deal. (March, 2011)
he band released a single, "In the Sky" through their website for free download. They also produced 50 physical copies complete with album art, but these were handed out at local live shows at no cost. After several shows and vague teasers on social media, Suicide By Spoon's Debut Album "The Horror of Symmetry" was self-released through their website on March 6th, 2011. It was recorded in Chris' Basement in just under 3 weeks when the boys were off school during the holidays.
The band went on tour shortly after, playing the entire album as their setlist for each show. They played shows in Vancouver, Kelowna and other parts of Southern BC before moving eastward to Calgary and Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ontario and even Lévis, Quebec. They also traveled to some US locations, including Chicago. They traveled the entire way in Martin's dad van (which they had 'borrowed' without permission) and filmed a vlog of the entire incident, though most of these videos have been deleted now. During this Tour, they met some of their close friends from 1st Assault and Spanky Revolution. This tour helped to bolster their small fanbase and they were offered a Record Deal with C&B Records. Once signed, their Debut Album was re-released under C&B Records and this heightened exposure resulted in Martin and Chris collaborating with various other bands, including Spectre, Spanky Revolution and many others. The Band had a minor controversy at the end of this tour when they snuck into a bar to attend a show headlined by 1st Assault. After the show, the two bands had a few beers together and got a bit rowdy. At some point, the police were called and Chris and Martin were arrested for disorderly conduct. Thankfully, no charges were pressed due to the young age of the band members. This was the start of a unexpected but deep friendship between the two bands. |
Collaborative Release, New Singles and Hiatus. (May 2011)
The Band began work on their second album, recording this time from a professional studio. Fans began to grow suspicious of an album release when new songs showed up in their setlists at liveshows, but no released date was confirmed. Instead, a Collaborated Album titled "The Unrecognized Telling of an End" was released on May 24th, 2011. It was a 13 track LP co-written, and composed by well the known musician, Spectre. The band began work on this secret album shortly after "The Horror of Symmetry" and it took the both fanbases of Spectre and Suicide by Spoon by total surprise. It is one of their highest selling releases to date. Just two days later, the band has also released a new single titled, "Just Let it Rain" on May, 26th, 2011. "Bittersweet" a backside track on the single features the guitar work of a rising star, known to the public as Zarpa_perras, who had jammed with Chris often. This Single was released for physical release through C&B Records in September.
The band went on Tour across Canada once again, now sponsored by C&B Records. Tragedy struck while Nick and Martin were driving home from a show and got into a car accident with a drunk driver. Thankfully both of them survived, but their injuries left them unable to play shows for a time. Friends of the band Spectre and Zarpa_Perras filled in for the two brothers on guitar until the tour was over. The band decided to go on hiatus after the tour while the brothers recovered, as well as to finish their schooling. They were dropped from C&B Records at this time. |
Reformation, New EP, Sophomore LP and Style Change. (August 2011)
In Late August, a few months the accident, Martin and Nick were able to return to the band and began work on their next release. The Band was signed to the upcoming Record Label POM Records. Their first release through their new label, the 6 Track EP "Broken Bonds and Worn Out Songs" was released on August 15th 2011.
In an Exclusive Interview with Rottin' Randy, Suicide By Spoon revealed that they had begun work on a second and possibly final LP. The Album's title, "The Diaries of Dead Men" was leaked and it was confirmed to be a Concept Album and direct follow up to the band's first release, "The Horror of Symmetry." This Album would mark a significant departure in style from the previous release, notably with more melodic lead guitar and an experimental style, more similar to "Post-Hardcore." |
Dead Men Don't Speak Tour. (November 2011-April 2012)
The album was eventually released in November of 2011. In conjunction with the release of the Album, Suicide By Spoon launched their largest tour yet in November of 2011: The Dead Men Don't Speak Tour, which would begin on the West Coast of Canada and end in the Eastern United States.
Martin also left a Post on his social medias for the band's fans:
Martin also left a Post on his social medias for the band's fans:
"We get a lot of fan mail, mostly for signing merch, personal questions, fan art, etc.
But the most recurring questions is, 'Why don't you guys ever come see your fans here?'
and the truth is, It's not that we've never wanted to tour outside of North America,
we just never had the money to travel overseas. Most of our releases have been free
and we really don't do this for money but because we enjoy making music. But we still feel bad,
Which is why, after we finish the US tour, we're going to take a short break from touring til January . . .
So that we can prepare for our first World Tour ever! USA was only part one! So Europe, Asia
and even Australia! We're coming for you! Dates will be released soon.
And you thought we didn't care! ;) Of course we do!"
The rest of the tour took place with the band hitting western Europe from January to February, then select locations in Asia from mid-february until march and finishing the Tour in Australia and New Zealand in April. Their final show was on April 19th, Chris' Birthday, and brought about the conclusion of their first World Tour.
Final Live Show and Break up. (September 2012)
The band announced that a secret show would take place on the 8th of May, in Kelowna, BC. The band played every song off of "The Horror of Symmetry," and most of the songs featured on their new album, "The Diaries of Dead Men" as well. Fans had begun to speculate the future of the band, which ultimately lead the band to issue a statement regarding future activities:
"Hey guys, there's been a lot of rumours and we'll try to answer as best as we can. For starters: Unfortunately, yes, Suicide by Spoon is breaking up. We're all still friends and we loved touring and meeting you guys. This was no one's first choice, but a difficult decision we as a band came to after much deliberation. We hope you all understand. We'll always love our fans and appreciate what you did for us. Without you, none of this would've been possible.
Big thanks to 1st Assault, Spectre, Zarpa_perras, Chester, Burger, Kyoufuu Razorwind, Spanky Revolution and all of our other friends who helped us out and our fans whom we love and appreciate!
As a treat, we'll release some links to a few secret songs we had written that didn't make it to the album.
And again, Thank you for everything."
- Sincerely, Chris, Martin, Nick and Adam of Suicide by Spoon."
