Biography
Formation and "The Black Tracks" (2005-2007)
Evening Sun was founded in Linden, NJ by original drummer Ian McLeod and rhythm guitarist Jerome Reed. The two, who then called themselves "The Brothers of Rock", started writing some of their own material as well as covering some of the hits of the time; including "By The Way" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Anna Molly" by Incubus, and "Best of You" by the Foo Fighters. These garage recordings and other unedited tapes have all either been destroyed or lost, and they are next to impossible to find online. Because of this, these tracks are colloquially referred to as "The Black Tracks". These tracks are highly prized among Evening Sun fans due to their rarity and the fact that they are practically the only songs to feature Ian McLeod as the drummer. Shortly after The Black Tracks were recorded, Ian McLeod parted ways with Jerome Reed after a fight between the two. "The dude stabbed me in the back! I had a gig all set up and he pulled out of the deal!" Jerome commented in an interview early 2010.
"Skruthapgs" Stint (2008-2009)
After the departure of Ian McLeod, Jerome Reed found himself alone and needing a band. He posted an advertisement in his preferred music store, saying "Rhythm Guitarist in need of drummer". This advertisement is what brought Michael Smith and Jerome Reed together. Michael, who was one of the most respected and renowned drummers in the area, was looking for a guitarist at the time. When Michael contacted Jerome, the two immediately set up a jam session for the next day. Michael was "...impressed by the talent and un-complicated style" that Jerome possessed, according to friends of the two. Jerome already knew of Michael, as he had seen one of his performances with his last band, the grindcore group known as "Defecate". Defecate split up shortly after this, and Jason Smith (Michael's younger brother, and Defecate's bassist) joined Michael and Jerome in the group, who then changed names from The Brothers of Rock to "Skruthapgs" (Pronounced as "Screw The Pigs" and often just called Skru.). Skru released one album, of which only 30 physical copies exist. These copies were all handed out by the band themselves at the high school Michael went to. These songs are often forgotten by Evening Sun fans, but they had an important effect. One of the copies was given to someone who had connections with a well-known band at the time, Wasted. Wasted was an alternative-punk / ska-punk outfit that was founded ten years earlier and had released twelve of their 13 releases. The drummer, Jaryd Owens, took particular liking to the band, and frequently went to Skruthapgs shows. In September 2009, Michael and Jason moved across the country to live with their cousins in California. This once again left
Current Line-Up (2009-2010)
For a period of time from September 2009 to November later that year, Skruthapgs was Jerome's solo project, where he did the guitar and bass lines. He would use a drum machine for his drums. During this time period, Wasted had released their last album, "Death of a Soul", which the band split shortly after for unknown reasons. Almost instantaneously, Jaryd contacted Jerome about being his drummer. Ecstatic, Jerome accepted. (Jerome was and is a profound Wasted fan.) Jason Smith also had moved back into the area as he was kicked out by Michael after he was found drunkenly having sexual intercourse with Michael's girlfriend. The three of them then picked up Defecate's former lead guitarist, Ryan Inabayan. This line-up changed their name from Skruthapgs to the current name, Evening Sun. Evening Sun, having Wasted's former drummer, immediately picked up hype in the music community.
"Cityscapes" Album, Tour with Warning Shot, Upcoming LP (2010-2013)
Evening Sun then started recording their first album, titled "Cityscapes". The album cover, and subsequently the song names, were leaked by Jaryd. "Hey, it's good for anticipation, ain't it?" commented Ryan. The album was released September 25, 2011; despite being scheduled for release on October 1, 2011. The early release was due to finishing up recording the material early, according to lead guitarist Ryan Inabayan. The album, upon release, received considerable praise from different sources, notably from label-mates Warning Shot, as well as Larry Herman of LOUDmag, who reviewed the album here. Also around this time period, members from both Evening Sun and Warning Shot got together to form the sludge-punk band Arrowhead. Then on October 6th later that year, the band announced that they would work on writing a new LP titled "Essence of Time" during their tour with Warning Shot.
